Albino Bone Rituals: Witch doctor

31/01/11  ||  Altmer

Another label-sent demo, another death metal record 15 minutes long, another slab of intensity, another album that I will ultimately forget about. Poor Albino Bone Rituals (wtf at that moniker, by the way). They tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end, they don’t really matter. It isn’t even half bad, this demo. In fact, it’s pretty good. Unfortunately, I have the idea that even though the riffing here is prime, and the sound is acceptable for a demo, that it will be forgotten and buried in the dust anyway.

Reason is that a) the vocals are pretty mediocre and b) this is the music industry, bitches. This doesn’t resemble Slipknot, the New Wave of American Shit Metal, or whatever the current metal trend happens to be. The music industry fails to hone the talents of bands playing interesting shit – just like this a-cut-above-the-norm death metal will be forgotten because nobody will ever listen to their demo. Oh, and because the vocals suck pretty hard. If the growler upped his ante, we’d be going into excellent levels here, but we ain’t.

The riffing here is quality, the music also delves into more technical moments at times – the album isn’t too chaotic overall, which is a good sign for any death metal album. It sounds controlled and like they know what they want to do and where they want to go with this – it is really a shame the vocals are holding the band back. That’s the only reason this album could definitively fail.

Recommendation: If I was Albino Bone Rituals, I would work on my vocals. Then I would witch doctor everyone in the industry out of a job. And sit on my fat ass doing the better things in life. Glorious.
